The best way to reduce bugs on your property is to limit their habitat.
Mosquitos require water to breed.
- Water (irrigate) lawn and landscape only when needed.
- Reduce the need for irrigation by selecting plants that require less water.
- Eliminate or reduce containers that hold water.
- Drill holes in the bottom of containers.
- Keep downspouts and drainage exit routes clear.
- Regrade low areas in your yard or landscape.
- Lakes and ponds need aeration and circulation. Stocking with mosquito eating fish can be beneficial.
· Use bug predator attractant plants in the landscape, and in lake/pond edges. Pollinator friendly plants attract good / friendly insects and birds that will feed on bugs and mosquitos and their larvae.
Filth Flies are the most common pesky flies that congregate around our outdoor living areas and often make their way indoors. The best way to reduce flies is to reduce their food source.
- Clean pet / animal feces immediately.
- Dispose of kitchen and other food scraps, and any other organic waste. If composting, keep covered when possible.
- Secure all garbage cans and tie bags as soon as possible.
- Rinse cans and recycling bins more frequently.
- Pick up fruit that falls on the ground.
- Indoors – do not overwater plants. The moist condition, along with wilting leaves attracts flies for breeding.
Wasp stings are painful and can be extremely harmful, even lethal if allergic reaction occurs. Wasps only respond to a threat. Therefore, the wasps and their nests only need to be removed in areas where people and their pets may be near.
- Knock down nest in the evening when the wasps are less active.
- Commercial pesticides are available with a long spray stream. Always use as directed.
- Wasp nests not near living areas need not be removed since wasps are beneficial as predators toward other pesky insects.
